Public Transportation
Getting around in New York is easy and confusing at the same time, especially for first-time visitors - easy, because there are more than enough public transportation options available, and confusing, due to the city's street layout and its large size. The public transportation service is the most popular way to get around in New York City, more than 50% of the city's population commuting to work by using the mass transit service.
New York City's public bus fleet and commuter rail network are the largest in North America. The rail network consists of New Jersey Transit, Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad, which converge at Grand Central Terminal and Pennsylvania Station and contain more than 250 stations and 20 rail lines.
In order to use the city's public transportation (bus and subway) services, a MetroCard is required. While it is possible to pay for a bus using exact change (in coins), you must have a MetroCard to enter the subway system. The base fare is $2.25.
The bus services are offered by MTA, with different bus lines, identified by letters followed by numbers, the letters indicating the borough in which the line mostly operates (Bx=Bronx, Q=Queens, S=Staten Island, or M=Manhattan).
There are also plenty of taxi services available in New York, which are easy to spot - most of them are yellow.
Riding the bike or walking are considered great options to get around in New York, as well. However, if you're visiting New York City for the first time, it might be best to carry a map of the city on you, or better yet, if you know somebody in the city, ask him/her to show you around - it's easy to get lost in New York, and it might be best not to wonder alone on the streets, especially during the night.
